Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh due to political crisis in the neighboring country and various difficulties. India has deployed additional troops along the Bangladesh border after the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.

 

 

Ms Hasina fled Bangladesh on Monday to India, where she spent the night. His current location has not been released.

Call for meeting

India has yet to officially announce the development, but the federal government has called opposition parties for a meeting.

Economic and cultural relations

India shares a 4,096 km (2,545 mi) border with Bangladesh and has close economic and cultural ties with the country.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting on Monday to review the situation. According to reports, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar may make a statement in Parliament on Tuesday.

Long-standing tension in Bangladesh over India

There are concerns that lingering tensions in Bangladesh could spill over into India, which has been seen to have supported Ms Hasina during her 15-year-long tenure despite jailing her dissidents and opposition leaders.

Five Indian states share a border with Bangladesh, which was formed in 1971 after a war with Pakistan. According to official data from last November, about 915.35 km of the border is unfenced.

From a security perspective, Ms. Hasina’s tenure was relatively peaceful for India as she cracked down on anti-Indian militancy in her home country. He also granted transit rights to secure trade routes for the states bordering Bangladesh.

Bangladesh border inspection

On Monday, top officials of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) visited the Bangladesh border in the eastern state of West Bengal to review “operational readiness and strategic deployment of BSF in this critical border area”.

 

The BSF said it had “received strict instructions from the government not to allow anyone to enter the country without valid documents”.

Train services between India and Bangladesh have been suspended “indefinitely” – they have been closed since mid-July after violent protests broke out in Bangladesh.

India has also asked its citizens in Bangladesh to exercise “extreme caution”.

More than 4,500 Indians returned home in July with the help of its diplomatic mission in Bangladesh.

On Monday, following Ms Hasina‘s resignation, the northeastern state of Meghalaya imposed a night curfew on its border with Bangladesh.

In West Bengal, which shares the longest border with Bangladesh as well as close linguistic and cultural ties, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed for peace.

Suspension of land ports

The movement of goods through Petrapol land port on the border has also been stopped. According to the news, hundreds of Indian trucks are stuck in Bangladesh.

A senior diplomat told the BBC on Monday that India “doesn’t have much of an option at this point”.

“We have to tighten border controls. Anything else will be considered interference.”

After Ms Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on Monday, large crowds thronged her official residence in Dhaka amid allegations of looting and chaos in the capital. At least 20 people were killed in the violence, adding to more than 90 deaths on Sunday, which was already the highest single-day casualty record in Bangladesh’s recent history.
