Taiwan suspends flights in anticipation of Typhoon Gaemi

Strong Typhoon Gaemi is predicted to arrive in Taiwan late on Wednesday and is expected to cause havoc on the island’s northeast shore.

Taiwan suspends flights

Parts of the island’s biggest yearly military exercises have been canceled due to the storm, which is the first typhoon of the season to strike the island.

The Transport Ministry reports that over 200 international flights and nearly all domestic flights have been canceled.

Along the route to Taiwan, Gaemi dumped an abundance of rain on much of the Philippines, causing floods that turned Manila’s streets into rivers.

With winds as high as 240 km/h (150 mph), the typhoon is comparable in wind strength and potential damage to a high category 4 hurricane.

With the exception of the Kinmen islands, the government has proclaimed Wednesday a typhoon day and suspended work and classes throughout the island.

The BBC was informed by TSMC, a major manufacturer of chips, that regular operations will continue at its sites.

As of right now, the storm is moving a little bit more to the north, passing across northern Taiwan, including the capital Taipei, later on Wednesday night. On Thursday, it will then exit into the Taiwan Straits and hit the South East Chinese province of Fujian.

inds, Gaemi’s primary hazard is the enormous amount of moisture it is bringing with it.

The Central Weather Administration of the island has declared a state of emergency for the entire country of Taiwan, citing Wednesday and Thursday as the worst days for wind and rain.

Authorities in Taiwan have issued a warning, stating that for the next 24 hours, more than one meter of rain is predicted to fall on the island’s central and southern mountains.

The region that would be affected is in central Taiwan; earlier this year, a significant earthquake there caused mountainsides to become unstable. As a result, flash flooding and landslides are possible.

Supermarket shelves were empty on Tuesday night in Taipei, the capital, where there has been a lot of rain and gusting winds. People were stockpiling in anticipation of a significant increase in prices following the typhoon.

Despite their repeated claims that the exercises would be “the most realistic ever,” the government was also forced to cancel portions of their scheduled week-long Hang Kuang military training on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the danger of the typhoon.

On Wednesday, strong rains were also brought to the northern provinces and the Philippine capital area by Gaemi and the southwest monsoon. There, work and classes have been suspended along with stock and foreign exchange transactions.

As rivers and streams overflowed, Metro Manila, home to around 15 million people, was declared under a state of calamity.

Social media users shared footage of commuters stuck on bus roofs and tiny cars drifting in chest-deep water.

The rains, which are normal for this time of year, might last until Thursday, according to the state weather bureau.
