The defending champion scored 15.300 points to lead China’s 1-2 result in the event, with compatriot Zou Jingyuan earning silver with 15.233. They were ahead of Greek bronze medalist Eleftherios Petrounias, who finished with 15.100 points.
“I am in good shape today. “I was able to compete at my best,” Liu stated. “Another thing is that I am incredibly organized. I make plans and carry them out, therefore I followed the timetable I set for myself during the last few days. That helped me recover from the outcome of the team final and win gold here.”
Liu, the defending world champion, became the third man to win two consecutive gold medals in rings. This was also the third time China finished in the top two positions in the event.
Samir Ait Said, the lone male competitor representing host nation France in artistic gymnastics, placed fourth with 15.000 points, energizing the crowd in Bercy Arena, which waved French flags and cheered loudly for him.
