When the current World Champion cleared 2.07 meters on her second try, Yaroslava Mahuchikh first achieved a new National Record and Personal Best.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh was sensationally broken

Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine was aware of her potential. The women’s high jump record of 2.09 meters was set by Stefka Kostadinova at the 1987 World Championships. Mahuchikh was expected to do this ever since she broke the all-time U20 record in 2019 by clearing 2.04 at the Worlds. And eventually, the 37-year-old World Record was broken on Sunday after an amazing evening of track and field action at the Paris Diamond League.

 

Regarding the prospect of setting a world record, Mahuchikh had stated to World Athletics in April of this year, “I think first I need to mature mentally a little bit.” To beat the senior world record, I believe I need to pick up a little more pace. Perhaps the stars must align as well for it to occur.

The stars came together for the Ukrainian superstar at Stade Charléty, in the city of the 2024 Summer Games, which are in less than two weeks. When the current World Champion cleared 2.07 meters on her second try, she first achieved a new National Record and Personal Best. Amazingly, she grinned as she began her run-up, accelerated gracefully toward her goal, and cleared the height on her first try while attempting the all-time record mark of 2.10m. She looked to make sure the bar hadn’t fallen off as she stood back up, but it only swayed slightly before she left to continue her celebration. The response was quite telling. The audience gasped and she yelled in disbelief.

 

“I’ve thought I can accomplish this for the past two years. I had such a strong mentality and thought I could succeed. Later, she declared, “I have inscribed the name of Ukraine into the annals of sports history.”

The bronze medallist from Tokyo 2020 and current world champion dismissed claims that her leap made her the overwhelming favorite for the July 26–starting Paris Olympics. “I am excited to see the Olympics in this location. She remarked, “I know it will be hard and very competitive, but I am sure it will be a great competition with an even better atmosphere.”

Mahuchikh has already talked about fighting with dignity for her war-torn country. She left her home city of Dnipro in early 2022 after the Russian invasion. She had declared in April that she was competing “for my country, for my people, and for our soldiers.” “I’m grateful to each and every one of them for giving me the chance to train outside of Ukraine and to represent my nation. I appreciate that I’ve motivated others to take up track and field.
